Research Proposal Hypertext: Hong Kong citizen's divided opinion on Umbrella Revolution
Since the end of September, Hong Kong student groups have been protesting against the Beijing Decision.
The Standing Committee of the Twelfth National People's Congress considered at its Tenth Session the Report on whether there is a need to amend the methods for selecting the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2017 and for forming the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2016 submitted by Leung Chun-ying, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, on 15 July 2014. In the course of deliberation, the relevant views and suggestions of the Hong Kong community were given full consideration.
"The Chief Executive-elect, after being selected through universal suffrage, will have to be appointed by the Central People's Government."
Since then, the students had planned to protest after the online universal protest action was not taken seriously. The students from many famous universities occupied the central road of the most important financial districts and peacefully demonstrated their hope on having a real universal election.
The video on the right from BBC News well explained what have happened in Hong Kong with regard to this issue. |

The Student said they want their voices to be heard. Their spirit and courage have been cherished by many pro-democracies and many people thought they have seen hope in Hong Kong becoming democratic.
This scene reminds us of the Tiananmen Square incidents, which also involves student protests. However, what is different this time is that Chinese Government did not label the students as anti-government and morally corrupt this time, but simply use a soft tone to try to convince the students. Apparently the central government fails to ease the angry students. |
However, there seems to be other voices that haven't been heard from the media, especially probably have not reached the pro-democratic nations at the beginning. On day 2, this women confronted the students, seemingly disagreeing with the student's action.

After a week of protest, as I have stated in the current situation, many citizens run onto the street and started the Anti-occupy actions. Elder citizens started a alliance which oppose occupy central but support universal election.
Opposing ideas exist between pro-democracies and pro-stabilities. What do people really think?
In order to answer this question, firstly the research paper intends to look at economic and social influences in Hong Kong since the umbrella revolution.
On the economic scale, the research will specifically focus on stock market and retail markets, while on the social scale, the research will focus on cases of violations and tensions presented during the protests between the two groups.
Secondly, in addition to observe and analyze what have happened, the paper aims to analyze the opinions of Hong Kong students overseas specially on Emory campus. Most students who have the opportunities to travel abroad are from higher socio-economic status, so it would be interesting to see how they view the action of Protests, and what do they think should have done to address the universal election issue.

Ideally, the survey will be distributed to HK students on campus, mainly through Hong Kong Student Association. The survey will be anonymous.
From Collin Barker in Passionate politics, "the cognitive and the affectual are not distinct, and especially not opposed , spheres, but arer ather inseparable aspects of each other. There are no emotions without ideas (contrary to somesymbolic interactionists, e.g. Blumer 1969), and no ideas without emotions." There is a reason that the students shows this strong emotion, and it has to reflect their ideas in some way.
The paper wants to catch this idea, and seek deeper truth beneath the surface of the HK occupy central issue.
